MOTHER

My mother moved from the nursing care to the respite care section of her facility yesterday. This is the in-between stage leading to assisted living. If she can handle it for a month, she may insist on going home again or choose to go to full time assisted living. Its a difficult period for her. Together, we have decisions to make.

You don't want to take away a loved one's free will. Its a lot like raising children. You give children steadily more and more freedom so that they can progress to the point that they take care of themselves. With the elderly, you give them steadily less and less freedom until they totally cannot take care of themselves. Its tricky. Its the circle of life.

Lately, I find myself thinking about me being in her situation. I don't know how I will handle it. I dread it.
