SUNSPOTS

Sunspots are a phenomenon that we Earthlings have observed for more that 100 years. No one is quite sure what causes them but they and their effects are definitely observable. Sunspots send electrical energy in the form of negative particles (electrons) out into space away from the sun. Some of these electrons come into contact with the Earth's atmosphere. Their contact with our air causes ozone to be manufactured. More sun spots equal thicker ozone layer around the Earth. Less sunspots equal a thinner ozone layer. The ozone layer has an effect on our weather. Ozone absorbs the sun's heat.

Records of sunspots have been kept for more than 100 years. Sunspot activity varies greatly from time to time. Records have been kept because heavy sunspot activity or large sunspots can disrupt radio broadcasts. Right now, it is impossible for us to predict sunspot activity.

Our ozone layer is being depleted because of a very low level of sunspot activity. Who knows when sunspot activity will increase?
