DOOMSDAY

Didja ever hear of the Doomsday Clock? Created in 1947, it is supposed to be a representation of how close the Earth is to nuclear apocalypse or environmental disaster. It is based on the 24 hour day. A group of scientists including 19 Nobel laureates make up the board which determines changes.

In its 63 years of existence it has been adjusted only 18 times. The best we have ever been is in 1991 when the clock was set at 17 minutes until midnight. The worst shape we were ever in was in 1953 when the clock stood at 2 minutes until midnight.

This week the symbolic clock was moved back one minute; from five to six minutes until midnight. Sleep easy. The world is a little better off.
