FISH & FIRE

One thought leads to another.

There are fish fries all over town on Fridays in Lent. Fried white fish of one kind or another is the usual fare. Most are sponsored by churches trying to make a few bucks. Thinking about this reminded me of the fireman's fish fries that used to be held quarterly at St. Johns Church. Firemen and emt personel would walk from business to business selling tickets and reminding people that the fish fry was nearing. I always bought dinner for the family and picked it up on the way home from work. This was in the seventies and early eighties ... and before the churches caught on to the opportunity to make money. The funny part of this is that the firemen needed to make money. Back then, we had an all-volunteer fire department. Our community was very small. I never gave it a thought then, but they were raising the money to buy new equipment or repair what they had. How strange that seems now. Property taxes have taken the place of the fish fry.
