Miep Gies was a Dutch lady who died earlier this year a month short of her 101st birthday. She was not famous for her longevity but what she did at a crucial time in her life. She and her husband Jan were the couple who hid Anne Frank, her family and some other Jewish friends from the Nazis during World War II. She was the one who found and preserved the famous diary of after the Franks were arrested. Miep and her husband recieved many awards from Germany, the Netherlands and Jewish organizations for their heroic actions. I wonder if there are many in the world today who would risk their lives for people they did not know. True heroism is something we should always admire.
