CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

The Reds opened the week in Arizona with three against the D-Backs and Cincinnati was as hot as the Phoenix temperatures. No contest . . . and the Cards lost two at the same time to move the Redlegs 3-1/2 in front.

On Friday night in the Queen City, the Bengals hosted the Eagles in a preseason contest. It was an especially hard hitting game in which the defense held up well and the offense looked a little better.

On Friday, the Reds hopped to SOCAL for three against the Dodgers who they hadn't beaten in Chavez Ravine since 2005. Homer Bailey was very sharp in the opener and coupled by another St. Louis loss the reds moved to 4-1/2 ahead. On Saturday, Johnny Cueto came back from his suspension from the previous week's tussle with the Cards and threw up a bunch of gofer balls. The Reds lost 8-5. On Sunday, Bronson Arroyo did his thing again and Joey Votto did his thing as Cincinnati won the rubber game 5-2. As the week ended, the Reds were 3-1/2 games ahead of the Cardinals. The road trip continues in San Francisco this week.
