CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

The UC Bearcats basketball team signed a "four star" player for next season. Shaquille Thomas of Nia Prep in New Jersey is a 6'-6" small forward.

Chad Ochowacko claims he fractured ribs in Sunday's win over the Ravens. His head is too hard to crack.

The Reds had a three game series in Milwaukee to open the week. They won the first two in close games and got blown out 13-1 in the finale. Joey Votto missed the last two games with a sinus infection.

Friday night lights.

Colerain (1) 56-14 over Lakota West

Moeller (2) 17-7 over St. Xavier (5)

La Salle (3) 21-0 over Lima Sr

Middletown (4) 42-9 over Hamilton (7)

Fenwick (5-0) 49-14 over Purcell Marion

Roger Bacon (5-0) 23-8 over Carroll

Next week Fenwick @ Roger Bacon!

The Reds flew to San Diego to meet the Padres in a 3-game set. Both teams nearing a spot in the post season. On Friday and Saturday, the Reds lost 4-3 in games they could have won (and would have won earlier in the season). The spark is gone from the offense. Joe Votto was back playing on Saturday and homered for one of the Reds' runs.

The UC Bearcats hosted the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday evening at PBS. The Sooners were rated in the top ten in the country. The Cats played a spirited but error filled game. They had the opportunity to upset their high profile rival but lost 31-29. Too often, they were unable to convert in the 'red zone' and made the critical mistakes; fumbles, punt muffs and interceptions at the most inopportune times. In the loss, I feel better about their chances for the rest of the season.

The Bengals were in Charlotte on Sunday for a tussle with the Panthers. They looked terrible on offense again and still managed to beat the talentless Carolina club 20-7. I wish I felt they were close to getting it together.

Also on Sunday, with their magic number sitting at 2, they pounded the Friars 11-2 with Votto homering again. Homer Bailey went eight innings. With this win, the Reds are assured of at least a tie for the division title. Magic number is now 1.
