CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

The Reds opened post season play in Philadelphia on Wednesday night and became a footnote in history. Roy Halladay pitched the first no-hitter in the playoffs since New York Yankee Don Larson no-hit the Dodgers in the 1956 World Series. It was Halladay's second no-hitter of the season and he missed by only a Jay Bruce 5th inning walk of having his second perfect game this year.

Undaunted the Reds exploded against the Phils on Friday night with home runs from Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce. Bronson Arroyo pitched well but the defense and relievers turned into sour milk as the Reds blew a 4-run lead to lose 7-4. Only a miracle now will keep them in the playoffs.

Friday night lights:

Fenwick (now 7-0) defeated CJ 30-27 in OT (Next week: powerful Alter)

Colerain (1) over Hamilton (7) 17-14

Middletown (2) over Mason 69-44

LaSalle (3) over St. X (5) 27-24

Moeller (4) over Elder (10)26-20

The UC Bearcats got back into action on Saturday against long-time rival Miami. If it was a fight, they would have stopped it at the half. As a matter of fact, they did stop it at the half. The Bearcats rolled up a 45-3 lead at the intermission and the Redhawks were helpless to do anything about. Coach Davis called off the dogs, played underclassmen and the game ended without further scoring. If UC stays healthy, they could make some loud noise in the Big East.

The Bengals started off a warm beautiful Sunday with a tussle against the Tampa Bay Bucs. Trying to forget the debacle in Cleveland last week when they gave away what should have been an easy win, they found a new way to do the same. Cincinnati gave up 10 points in the last 1:26 of the game to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory 24-21. They now have a week off and plenty of time to figure out new and ingenious ways to lose games they should win.

The Reds continued their best-of-three series with the Phillies on Sunday night. It was do or die on the banks of the Ohio and Cincinnati died. The best bats in the NL forgot how to hit, the best defense in the NL forgot how to field, the best comeback team in the NL didn't. End of a nice season.
