CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

The UC Bearcats played Wright State at the Shoemaker Center on Wednesday night. The Cats pulled away to a 20-point lead in the second half but had to hold off the Raiders in the final minutes to win 77-69. Freshman Sean Kilpatrick got more PT with several starters fighting illness and he dropped in 26 points in 28 minutes including five straight 3-pointers.

Over in Oxford, Xavier ran into a buzzsaw made up of hotshooting Miami Redhawks. Miami won 75-64 even though Tu Holloway and Mark Lyons each scored 18. They might try playing a little defense.

In case you didn't notice (and I usually try not to notice these things) the Xavier Lady Muskateers basketball team is undefeated and rated number four in the country. Wow! Can a Lady be a Muskateer?

In case you didn't notice, the Miami University Redhawks football team pulled off a huge upset beating Northern Illinois Huskies to claim the Mid-American Conference Championship. The wild final score was 26-21.

The Bearcat football team had their season finale on Saturday in a snowstorm at noon before a national audience. They played their usual error filled game against the Pitt Panthers and lost 28-10. Their season ends with a disappointing 4-8 record. They went down fighting including the mascot who got handcuffed and taken to jail for throwing snowballs and resisting arrest.

To open the season in high school basketball on Friday night, Fenwick beat Oakwood and Hamilton beat Edgewood. On Saturday night, Mariemont rolled over Batavia as Taylor Sizer scored 12 for the Warriors.

The Bearcat basketball team went to 7-0 with a rout of the University of Toledo (0-8) on the loser's home court. Dion Dixon had 17 in the meaningless beatdown which ended 81-47.

On Sunday afternoon, with a few hardy souls braving the cold at PBS and no local TV audience, the Bengals fell to the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints 34-30. The Saints scored a TD with 31 seconds on the clock after Cincy jumped offsides to extend their drive. Cincinnati played high risk defense and did well most of the day but gave up big, big plays to Drew Brees and company. Now 2-10, the Bengals were again their own worst enemy.
