I must confess, I am a contact abuser. This is the last day of April and tomorrow I begin using a new pair of lenses. I use "one month" soft contacts. You are supposed to wear them one month and then discard them. The doctor gives you a prescription for twelve pairs and then you are supposed to come back and get your eyes checked. No one is allowed to sell you contacts without a prescription. Naturally, the rebel in me came out when I discovered this and began looking for a way around the law.
I got my 12 month prescription in December of 2009. I started off doing things the right way but it seemed so foolish to throw away what seemed to be a perfectly good pair of lenses. The idea is that you wear your lenses about 16 hours a day and soak them in a cleaning solution for 8 hours while you sleep. No matter, they get coated with a cholesterol buildup that, after a while, the cleaning solution cannot remove. The other reason is that the doctors want to see you every year ostensibly to insure the contacts are not hurting your eyes but really because it makes money sense.
Well, after a month or two, I got the brainstorm to try something. I got a second lens cleaning case and opened two pair at once. This way I could rotate a different pair each day and the lenses would actually soak for 32 hours between uses. The two pair I have been using I put into service on January first of this year. So, I am getting four months out of two pairs and doubling their useful life. I have two more pairs. Genius! I'll have to look for a new eye doctor in a couple of months, the old one wont give me another prescription because I am a, shhhh, CONTACT ABUSER. Don't tell the little ones.
