RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

DE-----

People make quick assessments of people they meet or talk to.  We judge people by how they look, how the carry themselves and how they speak.  If you want to keep yourself above the crowd, pronounce every de --- with Merriam Webster's first option, which is di.  The long and accented de is allowable in our language but it so reeks of second class.  The most common one is Detroit City.  It is pronounced di-'troit and not de'-troit.  The goes for every other word in our language beginning with de.  Though either pronunciation is acceptable according to the dictionary, always use the di with accent on the second syllable.
