RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

VACATION

We had to get up at 5:15 yesterday morning.  We had a quick breakfast at the motel with the team.  We left for the meet at 6:30.  It was an hour drive to the site.  The state meet was held at a horse farm.  Ryan and Joe had driven in and Brian and Kristen came with their youngest.  The Martin County girls went off first and the boys went off third.  Every twenty minutes another group would be going off all day.  Florida has six school classifications.  In each group is about 150 runners.  Schools enter seven with the top five places scoring.  A few elite runners are there without teams.  We walked to the grandstand area about a mile from the parking area.  It cost the two of us $28 to get in.  Each school had a tent or tarped area where they could sit and dress.  The course was about a mile long.  The runners passed the grandstand twice before finishing.  A bicyclist led them around to make sure they stayed on the right track.  There was an announcer like at the horse races and a time clock you could watch.  It was very exciting.

After the race, we drove to Palm City - rested - then had dinner at Carrabas.  We celebrated Karen Fuhrman's birthday.  Ben went to the movies with his girlfriend.
