Six weeks ago I talked about the special words used by college football coaches. Today, I'll talk about college basketball coaches.
These are intelligent men, mind you...college graduates, all. Their particular coach-speak doesn't have to do with special words. In the last fifteen years, it has to do with only one word. As a group, they have discovered that there is a "ball" used in their game. Now, they all say "score the ball" when they mean "score" or "make baskets". When they are talking about rebounding, they are all compelled to say "rebound the ball". And when they are talking about defense, they have to say "guard the ball". When talking about the offense, they often say "take care of the ball". Duh! Can you say "superfluous"? If not the ball, what? Lets get on the ball, boys. You don't have to keep reminding us. We know your game involves a ball.
