Did you get your girl scout cookies yet? You can thank Juliette Low for the cookies. She's the one who started the Girl Scouts of America in 1912 - 100 years ago this year! The first meeting was on March 12th in Savannah, Georgia. She called them Girl Guides.
Born Juliette Gordon in 1860, she married William Low when she was 26 years old. At the wedding, a grain of rice thrown by well wishers got wedged in her ear. They broke her ear drum trying to extract it, the ear became infected and she lost her hearing in that ear for the rest of her life. Juliette never had a children of her own. She died of breast cancer in 1927 and was buried in her Girl Scout uniform.
