I chose this person for my list because her name is known by so few. Mary Surratt was a boarding house owner/operator in Washington D.C. in the 1860's. She was convicted of treason, conspiracy, and plotting to murder. The murder that was plotted in her boarding house was that of Abraham Lincoln. John Wilkes Boothe, Mary's son John Jr., and others met there several times discussing kidnapping the President or his assassination. All had collaborated with the Confederate Army during the Civil War and were disappointed that the South was defeated. John Wilkes Boothe was shot and killed shortly after the assassination. John Jr. fled the country and avoided prosecution. Mary was convicted in a military trial and became the first women to be put to death by the U.S. Government. She was hanged with three others on July 7, 1865.
