I saw Muhammad Ali carry out the baseball to start the first game for the new Miami Marlins in their new ball park. He was brought in from outside the centerfield wall on a big cart with a man holding his hands in an effort to keep them from shaking. He was gaunt and bent over even while seated. He didn't really carry the ball because he couldn't. It was put into his hand when they arrived in the infield. He couldn't really turn his head to acknowledge the players waiting for him.
He was one of my sports heroes. I could separate everything he was or did out of the ring from his perfection while in it. I know he's been sick for many years now. I hope he enjoyed himself. It definitely was not enjoyable for me to see him in this state.
