One of the real interesting things to watch regarding the Bengals in the next four months, is the news about free agent signee Vontaze Burfict. He is an undrafted junior linebacker from Arizona State with a curious past. His bio goes something like this.
Raised in the a rough neighborhood in Southern California, he signed with Southern Cal out of high school and quickly transfered to Arizona State. As a freshman, he was the best linebacker in the Pac-10. As a sophmore, he was the best linebacker in the country. The word most often used to describe him was vicious. As a junior, he was so-so...committed an inordinate number of personal fouls...and rumored to be on drugs. Some insiders there said he was bad for the locker room. He declared for the NFL draft and then didn't take the scouting combine seriously and failed a drug test. He went from being the best in the country to being undrafted by the NFL. No one wanted to waste one of over 200 draft choices on him.
Enter Cincinnati, the NFL rehab facility. Mike and Marvin are going to attempt to save and resurrect a career for this young man. Good luck to them. In the mean time, keep the women and children off the streets.
