The first phrase we learned in freshman Latin class was "Vestis virum facet"; English translation "The clothes make the man." I took four years of Latin in high school. I hated it then but have never regretted it. What a great foundation for language study (and crossword mastery).
Now that I am retired, my clothes have changed. It first struck me when putting away my clothes after washing a week's wear (no, I didn't wash them myself - I'm not there yet).
Where once I would have at least five pair of black dress socks, I now had none; a few pair of white footies is all - most days I only take off my flip flops or slide-ons to put on my running shoes or golf shoes. My dress shoes have gone un-used.
I've only worn slacks and dress shirt to church and restaurants. Shorts and t-shirts are the uniform of the day - every day.
The other lost item is underwear. There used to be a large stack each week. Now . . . well I'm saving on washing detergent.
