MEDICINE

At the end of his workday, do you suppose your primary care physician can say that he has helped many of his patients avoid disease?  I would guess we're talking about only a few who were given a flu shot or some other inoculation.

What percentage of patients were prescribed drugs to control or counteract the symptoms of some problem they already have?   Most.

How many of his patients are taking some medicine every day of the year?  How many of his patients should expect to take some medicine for the rest of their lives?  Have our general practitioners, family doctors and internal medicine specialists turned into little more than drug pushers?  Of course they have - and whose fault is that?   Ours!  We accept it as normal.

Are there any drugs for preventing disease?  Where would be the money be in that?

Are there any drugs for curing disease?  Sure, but the real money is in developing drugs that control symptoms; that people have to take every day for the rest of their lives.  That's where the research dollars are going in the private sector.  Drug companies have to make money.

Research into disease prevention is done in our universities and hospitals.  This holiday season consider that a gift to the right organization might actually help prevent disease in the future.
