RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

1/28/2013

JANUARY 28, 1985

On this date in 1985, an historic recording session was held at A&M Studios in Los Angeles. Arguably, the greatest collection of musical artists ever in one studio produced "We Are The World."  The single sold more than 20 million copies - all for charity.  $63 million was raised for the starving people of Africa, particularly for Ethiopia, which was rocked by famine at the time.

The song was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and was produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian.  Quincey Jones directed the singers and musicians.  Following is a list of participants.
Soloists:  Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Willie Neson, Al Jarreau, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, Darly Hall, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, Kim Carnes, Bob Dylan, and Ray Charles.
Chorus (partial list): Dan Akroyd, Harry Belafonte, La Toya Jackson, Waylon Jennings, Tito Jackson, Bette Midler, John Oates, The Pointer Sisters and Smokey Robinson.
