VISION

Every once in a while, I enjoy going back and reading my old posts. They're all easily brought up in the word or archive search at the right. Here is one from seven years ago.

VISION

One of the most important talents we humans develop is vision. Not the sense of seeing but the talent to see into the future. It separates us from most other animals and distinguishes between those we consider intelligent and those we think are not.

It would be very difficult to drive a car on the freeway if we only looked at the road just in front of our bumper. It would be darn near impossible. That's the way we are when we are young. Sadly, that's the way some people go through life. When we are young, we have our parents to look ahead for us. The inability of children to have this kind of vision causes most of the problems between them and their parents. Most accidents and accidental deaths are caused by lack of vision.

So, the questions come, can we speed the development of this vision? Can we make this vision better? Can we learn to see farther into the future? Can we learn to trust the vision that we have?

I say without a doubt, Yes. Like everything else in this life, practice makes perfect. Take the opportunity to stop and think about your future. Imagine yourself at each milestone age. Where will you be? What will you be doing? What will you look like? What will your world look like? Do this regularly. See if you don't get better.

Its also a great challenge in parenting that every parent should understand. Only by letting a child gradually gain more independence and making sure that every chance is taken to make the connection between the 'now' and the 'future' can they develop this vision. Simple cause and effect is not really so simple but its so important.
