On this date in 1974, Hank Aaron broke the "unbreakable" record of 714 career home runs held by Babe Ruth for 39 years. He did it in Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium as a member of the Atlanta Braves.
Aaron had tied the record a few days before in Cincinnati. The Braves opened the season with a three-game series against the Reds. He hit the home run into the left field stands at Riverfront Stadium in his first at-bat of the first game of the season. Braves management wanted him to break the record in Atlanta and he obliged by hitting no more in Cincinnati that series.
That home run in Cincinnati was called on the radio by Marty Brennaman in his first game as a Reds' announcer ... 39 years ago today. Of course, Marty is still the radio voice of the Cincinnati Reds.
