NORTH KOREA

The war in Korea ended 60 years ago this year.  The United States suffered the loss of about 45,000 young men to the conflict that ended with a stalemate and eventually, the division of the country into two distinct countries.  Additionally, we have kept fighting men on duty near the demilitarized zone between the two countries ever since.

The United States has promised to defend the South Korea from attack.  The Chinese have promised to defend the North Korea from attack.

The Kim family has ruled the North since the war has ended.  Kim Il-sung was the first president.  He ruled until his death in 1994 when his son Kim Jong-il took over.  The grandson, Kim Jong-un, took over in 2011 when his father died.

The resolution to the war brought us 60 years of relative peace in that part of the world but it can't last for ever.  Currently, neither the US nor China wants any part of another war.  Let's hope it stays that way.
