We couldn't get by without saliva. It serves several purposes including beginning the digestive process, lubricating the mouth and throat while eating, and protecting the teeth and gums.
Saliva has enzymes that are cleaning agents. We've all spit on a dirty spot to clean it.
Saliva promotes healing of skin cuts and abrasions. It soothes mild burns. It keeps your lips from drying out.
We don't have any problem using our saliva for all kinds of purposes. We don't have any problem swapping it with our loved ones. I've seen parents place baby pacifiers in their own mouth to clean it when dropped on the floor or ground ... then replace it in their baby's mouth. No problem. I've seen parents spit on a handkerchief to use it to clean their child's face. You might even let your puppy lick a sore on your leg. No problem.
But what about strangers saliva? Makes you sick to think about it.
Please don't spit on my hamburger!
