On this date in 1917, three shepherd children reported seeing and conversing with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, on a hillside in Fatima, Portugal.  Ten-year old Lucia Santos and her younger cousins, Jacinta and Francisco Marto saw the apparition on the 13th of each month for the next six months. 

As news spread, each month more and more people drew near to witness what was happening.  By October 13th, a crowd estimated at 70,000 stood by.  They reportedly witnessed the Miracle of the Sun; 
some saw the sun change colors, some saw it dancing in the sky.

During their visits, the Lady of Fatima revealed to the children three 'secrets' relative to the saving of the world.  The first two were instructions about worship, prayer and repentance and the need to convert Russia.  An emphasis was placed on the Rosary as a prayer and the icon of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  The third was given to the Pope; to be kept secret until 1960 when it could be more understood.  Rome chose not to reveal it in 1960 which has caused much controversy about it's contents.  Forty years later, what many think is an edited version of the third secret was revealed.
