DEBT

We don't hear much about it on TV any more but the National Debt Counter in the upper right hand corner of this page reminds us that our debt keeps growing.  Our country is still amassing enormous debt that our children and theirs will have to pay off some day.   The government is spending over a million dollars every two minutes - 24 hours a day - 7 days a week - every week of the year.  It would be worse without the sequester - automatic budget cuts imposed last Winter.

Well, we'll soon have another battle when the government runs out of money this Fall.   The House of Representatives will again not give the government more money without some spending cuts.  We've seen all this before.  They never get around to the items that would really save big money - entitlements like social security, welfare, etc.

I could see the tears coming out of an article by NBC the other day that said people have been hurt by the sequester.  Well, yes.  People are hurt when cuts are made.  That's the idea.  Someone has to hurt.  Someone has to get less from the government than they were getting before.  Without hurt, we cannot solve the problem.  Without solving the problem, the country goes belly up -  and that hurt is much, much worse.
