On this day in 1944, the week long Wola massacre ended. During this 7-day period of World War II, troops of Nazi Germany indiscriminately killed 40,000-50,000 Polish civilians in the Wola district of Warsaw. The organized mass executions were intended to break the will of the Polish freedom fighters. However, resistance in the capital city of Poland continued until the Germans had almost completely destroyed the entire city.
