RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

HOMECOMING

No one takes Latin anymore and that is sad.  It is such a help in understanding English and all the Romance languages.

I attended a homecoming football game last night and the school Alma Mater was played and sung.  It reminded me that, probably, most of the students had no idea what the words mean.  Alma Mater, you see, is Latin.  It translates to something like Nourishing Mother.  The phrase is used in reference to the school from which you graduate and also to it's song.  The idea being that school is your other mother.

Many of us hate, or at least dislike, school while we are there.   But it is good to remember that, like your mother, it teaches you lessons that will last and serve you well for a lifetime.
