HUMILITY

At all Catholic Churches this Sunday will be read the gospel in which Jesus tells the parable about the Pharisee and the tax collector.  The Pharisee's prayer thanked God that he was a good person and not a sinner like most people.  The tax collector's prayer just asked God's mercy and forgiveness because he was a sinner. Jesus said the tax collector, because of this attitude, would be praised and raised up higher than the Pharisee.

Pharisees were a sect that held very strict observance of all Jewish laws.  Pharisees were known as the holiest of people.  Tax collectors were, of course, government workers.  Everyone despised the tax collectors.

Like the attitude Pope Francis has taken, this lesson teaches us to concentrate on the most important things. Its fine to openly obey all the rules of your church but it is more important that you are a good person on the inside; be humble...God loves you.
