RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

10/14/2013

OCTOBER 14

On this date in 1926, A. A. Milne published his children's classic Winnie-the-Pooh.  It is the story and adventures of young Christopher Robin, his teddy bear Winnie-the-Pooh and all his other toy friends.

The book strikes a special cord for me because is was translated into many languages including, of all things,  Latin.  In 1958 the Latin version, Winnie ille Pu, was published and in 1960 it became the first foreign-language book to be featured on the New York Times best seller list and the only book in Latin ever to make it there.

I happened to be taking Latin in high school at the time and it caused quite a stir.  For just a moment, we thought that maybe Latin wasn't a dead language.

If you've never read it, you're never too old!
