The readings at Catholic Churches this Sunday all have to do with the afterlife. The first reading, from the book of Maccabees in the old Testament, is the most striking. It is the story of a mother with seven sons. A king had captured them and was trying to force them to disobey their religion by eating pork. The mother advised her sons to be strong and die a noble death if necessary rather than do what they were taught was wrong.
They were all tortured. Each professed that the afterlife was more important than present. Each died a horrible death including the mother. What do you believe in, if anything, that you would be willing to die for?
