First is a rare bird (for this area) called a Green (or green back) Heron. It is related to the great blue herons that we often see wading in the lake but it is much smaller. It does have the long beak of a fisher and legs built for wading. You can watch it stand motionless for many minutes waiting for small fish..
Here is another rarity for our area. It is called a Northern Goshawk. It is the largest of the hawk family. It is a beautiful bird and majestic in flight. Here we have a young one feeding on a squirrel that it killed with its large talons. It spread it's feast on a wide branch only ten feet or so off the ground and held it in place while it ate away. He didn't seem to care that we watched.
