RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

PUZZLE

The puzzle published last week was actually very simple.  Here it is again.

This problem can be solved by pre-school children in five to ten minutes, by programmers in an hour and by people with higher education... well, check it yourself!

8809 = 6     7111 = 0     2172 = 0     6666 = 4
1111 = 0     3213 = 0     7662 = 2     9313 = 1
0000 = 4     2222 = 0     3333 = 0     5555 = 0
8193 = 3     8096 = 5     1012 = 1     7777 = 0
9999 = 4     7756 = 1     6855 = 3     9881 = 5
5531 = 0     2851 = ???

The give-away clue was that pre-schoolers could solve it easily.  No adding, subtracting or the like were necessary.  The pre-schoolers just look at the numbers like they are pictures - then they count the circles.  1 has none; 2 has none; 3 has none; 4 has none; 5 has none; 6 has 1; 7 has none; 8 has 2; 9 has 1 and of course, 0 is 1:  ergo, 2851 = 2.  The programmers were mentioned because they write computer code with the digits 1 and 0.  QED  (Now, someone tell me what that means.)

The winner was yesterday's birthday girl who had it at 7:50 am.  I'm not sure if she guessed, had seen the puzzle previously or really figured it out.  No matter, congrats!
