Last Wednesday at sundown, began Hanukkah in the Jewish tradition. It is the Festival of Lights and lasts eight days. Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem as described in the Talmud. Each night, an additional candle is lit on a menorah (a nine-branch candelabra). The single raised branch on the menorah is used for house lighting and is not part of the rite.
In the Christian tradition, Advent begins today. It is a time of preparation and expectation of the coming of the Christ. Advent lasts until Christmas (almost four weeks). Each week, a new candle is lit on a wreath.
The readings at mass this Sunday will be about being prepared...personal preparation for the end...because, unlike Christmas, we know not when it comes.
