DECEMBER 2

On this date in 1942, as part of the Top Secret Manhattan Project, the first artificially induced self-sustaining nuclear reaction occurred.   The scientific team that accomplished this was headed by Italian immigrant Enrico Fermi.  Nobel Prize winning physicist Fermi is often called the father of the atomic bomb.  

On August 6th and 9th in 1945, we detonated the first and last atomic bombs ever used in war.  The Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed and World War II in the Pacific Theater was effectively over.
