On this date in 2007, Barack Obama, the junior senator from Illinois, announced his candidacy for the office of President of the United States.  The 45 year old did it on the steps of the Old State Capitol Building in Springfield, Illinois where Abraham Lincoln once orated.  In his speech, he called for an end to the Iraq war and the return of troops by March of 2008.
