Statistically, the airplane is still the safest way to travel. I love to fly.
That being said, on this date in 1977, two Boeing 747 jumbo jets collided on a runway on the Canary Islands. 583 died in the deadliest air disaster in world history.
KLM flight 4805 carried 234 passengers plus crew from Holland and Pan American flight 1736 carried 380 passengers plus crew from Los Angeles via New York to the Las Palmos, Canary Islands. Both planes were diverted to the smaller Los Rodeos airport on Tenerife because of a bomb scare at the airport. They landed safely but crashed into each other attempting to take off.
