In the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible and the beginning of the written Torah, is the well known story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. After Eve and then Adam disobeyed God and ate the fruit of the Tree of Life in the middle of the garden, they were summarily expelled; driven into the outer world where they had to work to survive.
In so doing, God said the following to Adam. "By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return."
Today, and the next 40 days, is a reminder that we are sinful beings. Only the sacrifice of our God can save us. Look forward to Easter.
