On this date in 1845, 100 years before I was born, Florida was admitted to the Union as the 27th state. Of course, it became my place of birth . . . its been a hot state ever since.
Did you ever notice that whenever you hear an item of 'strange' or 'bizarre' or 'gruesome' or 'weird' news, it happened in Florida? Now, 'unbelievable' news . . . that comes from Washington D.C.
The Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon set out from Puerto Rico with three ships looking for new lands on this same date in 1513. About four weeks later, he became the first European to see the continental United States when he spotted our southern penninsula and gave it the name La Florida (flower land).
Happy birthday, Florida.
