RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

WHEN I WAS A KID

When I was a kid, auto license plates were much simpler.  Every year you had to buy a new set.  Each state had its own color combination.  I can remember my uncle Earl, a Cincinnati 'traffic policeman', had them all memorized - I was amazed at that.

As years went on, Ohio changed their color combination each year.  For a time, the colors honored a university in the state.  One year scarlet on grey, another green on white, and another yellow on blue.  As far back as I can remember, Kentucky exclusively used white on blue.

Now, of course, each state has innumerable color combinations and background designs in use at any one time.  Much to my wife's dismay, I still try to check them out when on a road trip.  She spends more time looking at the road ahead when I'm driving than I do.  No wonder she hates to travel by car.
