When I was a kid, contact lenses hadn't been invented - those that fit onto the cornea were first developed in 1949. They came into widespread use in the late 1950's and early 1960's. They were hard lenses, easily dislodged and very expensive. People who had them purchased insurance in case they were lost.
I remember televised sporting events in the 1960's being stopped for contact searches. For a while it was commonplace to see college players and coaches on hands and knees crawling around on the court, trying to find a lost contact lens. Games were held up several minutes for these searches. Thank Goodness, we got past this.
Now, even old farts like me can wear contact lenses...soft ones, that don't come out for at least a month. I was born fifty years too soon.
