On this date in 1952, it was first reported that Christine Jorgensen was the first known American to have a sex change operation.  She had the work done in Denmark - several operations over two years.   Denmark became the answer to many jokes after that in the 1950's.

Ms Jorgensen was born George William Jorgensen Jr.  I'm sure George Sr. was very proud of him. He graduated from Christopher Columbus High School in New York City in 1945.  He had a stint in the Army and then attended college before he made the big decision.

I was in grade school at the time.  It was a story parents didn't want their kids to hear.  We snickered and wondered to ourselves how in the world that would work.  I still wonder!
