RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

12/08/2014

DECEMBER 8

On this date in 1980, John Lennon was murdered in New York City.  It was a senseless murder by a demented fan.  John's wife, Yoko Ono, had his ashes strewn in Central Park on the site that is now known as Strawberry Fields.

There is a lot that can be said about Lennon, his life as a member of the Beatles and afterwards as an artist and antiwar activist.  His talent was wide ranging.  I think I'll just give you the words to a song he co-wrote so that you can see the poetry of his words - words you may never have really heard.

Verses only of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

Picture yourself in a boat on a river
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes

Cellophane flowers of yellow and green
Towering over your head
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes
And she's gone

Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain
Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers
That grow so incredibly high

Newspaper taxis appear on the shore
Waiting to take you away
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds
And you're gone

Picture yourself on a train in a station
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile
The girl with the kaleidoscope eyes
