There was a time when I would be in a tither the Wednesday before the Super Bowl. I ran a Super Bowl Party at our school and preparations had to be made. This was in the early years of the big game; between 1976 and 1982 approximately. Beer, lunch, pools, gambling games, cards, lots of rented TV's - an all guys afternoon. The late start of the games ruined that kind of get-together. They were good times while they lasted.
The first Super Bowl game was in 1967. It kicked-off at 4:15 pm. The next ten years the kick-off times were between 2:00 and 3:45 pm. It was definitely an afternoon affair.
In 1978, we saw the first kick-off time after 6:00 pm. For the next 13 years the kick-off times were between 4:15 and 6:15 pm. Since then, they always start about 6:15 or 6:30 pm eastern. It's all about the dollars produced by advertising.
