WHEN I WAS A KID

When I was a kid, polio was a common disease, there was nothing that could be done for heart problems and cancer was certain and imminent death.  There was a helpless feeling about these ailments.

The polio vaccinations in the late 1950's eradicated that problem.  It is almost never seen these days.

In the 1960's, doctors began experimenting with heart transplants, cardiac bypass surgery and cardiac artery repair.  I would say that by the 1990's, these techniques were perfected so that open heart surgery and cardiac angioplasty are now commonplace.

In the last three decades, great strides have been made in the treatment of cancer.  Most forms are no longer the death knell they once were.
