On this date in 1981, 25 year-old John Hinckley Jr. shot and attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan outside a Washington D.C. hotel. Hinckley claimed he was trying to impress actress Jodie Foster. He was acquitted of the crime because of his insanity. He still lives in a psychiatric institution but is allowed visits to his parent's home. That's 34 years ago today.
