WHEN I WAS A KID

When I was a kid, the American flag in my elementary school had only 48 stars on it.  Doh!  Of course, there were only 48 states at the time.

We said the Pledge of Allegiance to that flag every day before classes began.  It was in 1954 when I was eight years-old,  that by act of Congress, "Under God" was inserted into the Pledge.  The nuns were all over that.

When I was in the eighth grade, the forty-ninth state (Alaska) was added to the Union.  By the time I started high school that same year (1959), the fiftieth state was added.

Sunday is Flag Day.  Display yours proudly.
