When I was a kid, we were ahead of our time. Even though we didn't have e-mail we did have Spam - loved that stuff. It was first introduced in 1937 and became very popular after World War II because of it's extensive use during the war.
It really isn't 'mystery meat'. It is pork shoulder and ham with a potato starch binder soaked in salt water. The gelatin forms naturally in the tin when it is cooked at the factory. It is high in protein and low in carbs. Okay, it's also high in fat and saturated fat. During the war, soldiers used it to lubricate their rifles. But, it wont hurt you. I swear.
