On this date in 1864, during the American Civil War, the Battle of Gainesville took place. I had no idea the fighting occurred that far south. It interested me because my grandson, Joe, matriculated at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
Several Union detachments, including the 75th Ohio Mounted Infantry, were occupying Gainesville at the time. They were attacked by a group of Confederate soldiers and local militia. The Union soldiers were routed - most killed or captured - by the smaller Confederate force. Those who escaped, went to Union garrisons in Jacksonville and St. Augustine. Gainesville was kept in control of the Confederacy the rest of the war.
Note: I don't think this had anything to do with Urban Meyer leaving the University of Florida and ending up at Ohio State.
