On this date in 1795 (220 years ago), the Treaty of Greenville was signed. This was a treaty between the US Government and the Indian tribes of the Ohio Territory. General 'Mad Anthony' Wayne represented the US in the town of Greenville just northwest of Dayton, Ohio. The treaty designated areas where Europeans were allowed to settle and gave goods (blankets, utensils, animals) to the Indians.
Like most of our treaties with the Native Americans, it was pretty one-sided. Eventually, many settlers ignored the treaty lines and set up homes wherever it seemed best. The treaty did bring a peace to the area which allowed it to grow quickly into the great part of the country that it is.
